I know someone who was in his touring band - for years. Apparently Gilbert wrote all his songs on his manager's piano which turned out to be a semitone out of tune.
That meant when he was on tour every piano at every venue had to be retuned.
It also meant his band had to play in keys they weren't usually accustomed to playing in.
Everyone was relieved when digital pianos were invented with transpose buttons.

I appreciate that they are well crafted pop songs, affecting lyrics, good musicianship, great melodies. But some of it is twee as fuck isn't it, I just couldn't listen to any of it for long, the odd song coming on the radio once in a while is enjoyable but more than enough for me.

Agree wholeheartedly about the lyrics to 'alone again'.

He was a guest on Danny Bakers radio show a few weeks ago, cane across as a very nice bloke.

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;

We used to sing:

Claire, what have you done over there?
You know that's your father's best chair.
It can't have been me
I went before tea
So there...

Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at 65 years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally

Second single I ever bought but not my favourite now. His first single "Nothing Rhymed" contains poignant lyrics 45 years on, in an age of You Tube and obesity:

"When I'm drinking my Bonaparte Shandy
Eating more than enough apple pies
Will I glance at my screen and see real human beings
Starve to death right in front of my eyes"
